Mini splits are awesome… until airflow drops, odors show up, or the unit starts working harder than it should. The good news: with the right setup, homeowners and apartment dwellers can thoroughly clean a ductless mini split safely and neatly—without blasting dirty water all over your wall, floor, or furniture.

This guide walks you through a simple, renter-friendly way to clean your mini split using the HVAC Guys Mini Split Cleaning Bag and Kit (the waterproof cleaning cover + drain hose + overspray guards/support pieces).

Why mini splits get dirty (and what you’ll notice)

Even in a clean home, mini splits constantly pull air across the indoor coil. Over time, you can get a mix of:

  • Dust and lint buildup (reduced airflow)
  • Bio-film and “musty” odors (especially in humid climates)
  • Drip issues and messy condensate
  • Performance loss (unit runs longer to hit temp)

If you’re noticing weaker airflow, strange smells, or you’ve never cleaned the indoor coil beyond the filter—this is for you.

Why a mini split cleaning bag matters (especially in apartments)

The hardest part of cleaning an indoor mini split is containing the run-off after spraying it down. It can easily ruin furniture and at best make for a frustrating cleaning experience.

A cleaning bag/cover kit helps you:

  • Capture dirty water and cleaner runoff
  • Direct it into a bucket or drain via the included hose
  • Protect walls, flooring, electronics, and furniture
  • Clean more thoroughly because you’re not “afraid of the mess”

For apartment dwellers, this also reduces the risk of water damage (and awkward landlord conversations).

What you’ll need

  • HVAC Guys Mini Split Cleaning Bag + Kit

    • This kit has everything you need to deeply clean your ductless mini split air conditioner evaporator coil. Including a patented 360 coverage transparent mini split ac cleaning bag cover, Foam Blaster coil cleaner, Flow Tab drain treatment tablet, industrial duty spray gun, 9” angled spray wand, fan spray nozzle, collapsible bucket, and a 17-piece faucet aerator to garden hose connection kit. The expanding hose is sold separately.

  • Basic extras (grab these at home)

    • Towels (just in case)
    • A standard garden hose
    • Gloves + eye protection
    • Optional: soft brush for stubborn buildup (nothing abrasive)

Step-by-step: Clean your indoor mini split with a cleaning bag kit

1) Power off the unit

  • Turn the mini split off at the remote, then switch it off at the breaker if possible. You’ll be working around moisture and electronics—don’t skip this.

2) Prep the area

  • Move anything under the unit (plants, furniture, electronics)
  • Lay a towel down beneath the unit for extra protection
  • Place the included bucket where the drain hose can reach

3) Install the HVAC Guys cleaning bag and guards

  • If possible, remove the outer cover of the evaporator (indoor unit). This will allow for greatest access to the evaporator coil.
  • Fit the cleaning cover around the indoor unit so it fully catches runoff
  • Cinch the drawstring tight to ensure it is firmly secure
  • Tip: Make sure the drain hose outlet on the bag is securely positioned inside of the included bucket.

4) Attach the Garden Hose

  • Utilizing the included 17 piece faucet aerator set, Attach the garden hose to a faucet and route it to the bucket or a drain
  • Drop the other end into the included bucket (or into a tub/shower drain if your setup allows

To prevent spillage, double-check the hose is securely connected. Double check the drain outlet will not pop out of the bucket once water starts flowing.

5) Remove and rinse the air filters

  • Open the front panel, remove filters, and rinse them with water. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.

6) Apply the Foam Blaster coil cleaner

  • Completely cover the evaporator coil and the blower wheel area with the Foam Blaster. Most coil cleaners are designed to sit briefly to loosen grime. Leave the Foam to work at the grime for 10 -15 minutes.

7) Utilizing  the included spray gun, nozzles and angled spray wand, rinse with sufficient pressure to fully penetrate the coil.

  • Start at the bottom of the coil and work upward. Continue this process until there are no signs of any chemicals remaining on the coil
  • Let runoff flow into the bag and down the hose
  • Avoid blasting water directly into electronics or wiring areas

You’re aiming for a controlled rinse, making contact with as much of the coil surface and blower wheel as possible

8) Let it drain, then wipe and reassemble

  • Wait a couple minutes for runoff to finish draining
  • Carefully remove the bag (keep it level)
  • Wipe the unit exterior and surrounding wall if needed
  • Reinstall filters once dry

9) Power back on and test

Turn everything back on and run the unit:

  • Listen for normal operation
  • Confirm airflow improves
  • Check that it’s not dripping unexpectedly
  • Lets the bag air dry and store for future use

Apartment-friendly tips (to stay safe and avoid damage)

  • Use a bucket, not a sink, unless you’re 100% sure the hose can’t slip out.
  • Keep water pressure controlled to prevent splashback.
  • If the unit is heavily gunked, smells persist, or the drain line seems clogged, you may want to perform another cleaning and utilize HVAC Guys Flow Tabs

How often should you clean a mini split?

A simple rhythm most homeowners follow:Filters: every 2–4 weeks (more often with pets)

  • Deep clean (bag + rinse): every 3–6 months
  • Heavier use/humid environments: closer to every 2–3 months
